The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and outreach in mathematical sciences. 

The main purpose of this position is to provide administrative support and assistance for activities at AIMS South Africa. This is a full-time, one year contract position with the possibility of extension.


  • Answer telephones, greet visitors and manage the reception area
  • Be the first contact for student enquiries
  • Travel and logistical arrangements
  • Assisting with organising of workshops, conferences and other events
  • Processing of bursary awards
  • Database administration
  • General office administration
  • Adhoc post related duties

Requirements include: 

  • A relevant post-school qualification in administration
  • At least 3 years of working experience in a related field and/or similar
  • Understanding and/or experience of the academic environment
  • The ability to prioritise tasks and complete them systematically
  • The ability to plan systematically and manage time effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal, language and communication (written and presentation) skills
  • Good organising, control and planning ability
  • The ability to work autonomously, accurately and thoroughly
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to take on new work and adapt as the position grows
  • Attending to student registrations


  • Familiarity with a university environment
