Call for proposals for the AIMS Alumni Small Research Grant

The continuous professional growth of AIMS students and alumni remains a top priority for the AIMS network. Based on the expressed interest of many AIMS students and alumni, AIMS has identified a need to enable graduates to:

  • Conduct individual research projects.
  • Supervise or co-supervise research projects, especially in their home institutions.
  • Visit AIMS Research Centres to conduct part of their research, give talks to students at the Centres and interact with local institutions and relevant local industries.

With generous support from the government of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and within the framework of the AIMS Research for Africa Project, AIMS is pleased to launch the AIMS Small Research Grant Programme, a five-year grant programme that will provide funding opportunities to students and alumni interested in applied research or industry research internships. Awards are tenable at any university or industrial institution. Grantees will be expected to spend at least 10% of their research time at an AIMS Centre of their choice, subject to approval by the AIMS Centre.

Applications of two project categories will be considered:

  1. The applicant will be supervised while carrying out their projects (Main researcher category).
  2. The applicant will themselves be in a supervisory or co-supervisory capacity and requests funds either to strengthen their existing research group or to set-up a research team (Principal investigator/co-investigator category).

Applicants may request funding, between $5,000 and $20,000, to support any of the following research activities:

  1. Any applied research project with a duration of between 6 and 24 months.
  2. Applied post-doctorate research.
  3. Industry-related research activities including industry research internships.
  4. AIMS alumni strengthening the capacity of their existing research group or establishing a research team with a strong focus on applied/interdisciplinary research or industry research.
